Service
Dr. Downey has been active in service work in both the local community and JMU. As do all faculty, he has served on a wide variety of committees within the university, such as his recent service on the JMU Centennial Commission. He has served in the community as an Associate board member for the Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District since the early 1990s. He has been active in local conservation and environmental groups such as the Massanutten Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Friends of the North River. In 1994 he received a grant to restore a degraded stream in western Rockingham County. He has reviewed grant applications for NSF and other grant providers, reviewed books and manuscripts for journals and served as a consultant for several companies. He has worked extensively with staff scientists from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the US Forest Service and other agencies on a variety of projects. On behalf of the chemistry department, he has received and administered funding for three 3-year grant periods for a "Research Experiences for Undergraduates" site, in which both students and faculty from JMU and other colleges work on research projects full time during the summer months
