ADLAB 1

In the past some students have failed to understand the importance of making a continued effort to make progress in demonstrating the list of skills required to pass this course. This semester, in order to facilitate active participation, there will be assignments. These assignments will simply require each student to demonstrate a commitment to completing the course by working on the required projects.

Assignment 1:

• Go to the BB
• Visit Apprenticeship in Experimental Physics
• Examine the list of competencies.
• Examine the grade book and verify that it reflects your current status.
• Pick 2 or 3 competencies that you need to complete.
• Choose a project that allows you to demonstrate the competencies.
• Set up and appointment with the persons overseeing this project.
• Develop a clear understanding of what must be done to satisfy the requirements.
• Schedule a time slot when you can work on this project.

Next week I will expect each student to hand in a one page summary of the points made above. Students, however, may not satisfy this assignment by working with their research advisor. Students need to identify a project that entails working on something outside of their research.

Consequences: Clearly if a student completes all the competency requirements they will pass the course. Completion of the above assignments, or any other assignment that I request, will not be required. I strongly suggest that students follow these guidelines thereby earning some good will points should a student encounter difficulties along the way, as well as, an aid to remaining on track.
