"MuLan: Undergraduate Physics at the Precision Frontier"

Abstract

The lifetime of the fundamental subatomic particle called the muon is a critical input parameter to the Standard Model of Particle and Nuclear Physics.  I will describe a currently active experiment, MuLan, that aims to measure this lifetime to a precision of one part per million, improving  over the current world average by a factor of almost twenty. I will  describe the physics of the experiment, emphasize the subtle design challenges involved when making a correct measurement at the precision frontier, and highlight the significant contributions of many undergraduate physicists from our collaborating institutions.
