Advanced E&M Phys 350

Chapter 2

This week we will review the problem set for chapter 1 and begin chapter 2.

The book is very complete. Chapter 2 should be a review of electrostatics. Things to notice:

- Ñ xE =0 and fixed charges are the conditions for electrostatics.
- Coulomb's law and Gauss's law are important.
- Superposition is a powerful principle that applies in E&M.
- There are three ideal types of charge distributions: line, area, volume.
- There is a triangle diagram that shows the relationship between r , V, E . Each equation in this diagram is important.
- Poisson and Laplace equation are introduced and will be important.
- Boundary conditions are considered for the electric field as you cross a charge distribution.
- Work, energy, and potential are related to each other.
- Conductors.
