Faculty OpeningsTenure-Track Position in Nuclear Physics for Fall 2010
The James Madison University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure track
faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in experimental nuclear/particle physics or a closely
related field beginning August 2010.
We seek outstanding candidates with an earned Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics and
relevant
postdoctoral experience, preferably in instrument/detector development. A demonstrated record of teaching
physical sciences or mentoring undergraduates is required. The successful candidate is expected to initiate
and maintain a vigorous research program involving undergraduates and be an effective teacher at all levels
of the undergraduate physics curriculum, including courses for non-science majors. The new faculty
member is expected to take a leading role in the Applied Nuclear Physics program now being developed.
The department has 20 full-time faculty members and ~110 students in our multi-track
baccalaureate-only program. Departmental research interests include materials science,
nuclear/particle physics, non-linear systems and astronomy. In May 2005, the department moved into a
new Physics and Chemistry building. A significant part of the $2.7M in equipment funds associated with
the new building was used to acquire detectors and instrumentation for the four existing nuclear/particle
physics research laboratories in support of research programs at Jefferson Lab, TUNL, and Fermilab.
A document outlining the proposed Applied Nuclear Physics program at JMU can be
found here ( Applications are only accepted through web submission. Applications are submitted via the web. For details on applying for this position, visit
csm.jmu.edu/physics/html/application.html.
Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2009. Applications will be accepted until the position is
filled.
JMU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action/equal access employer and especially encourages
applications from minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.
