The Fundamental Studies option is the traditional model for
undergraduate physics which is still widely expected for acceptance to
most graduate programs in physics in the United States. It provides a
thorough exposure to the analytical and theoretical methods used in
advanced physics. Students who pursue this path will develop strong
mathematical skills to use in describing quantitatively the world around
us. Not only will they be prepared for continued education in the
sciences, but they will also have demonstrated many of the skills and
traits valued in the job market today including quantitative and
analytical reasoning, scientific communication, and a strong work ethic.
Notes:
- PHYS 347 is now being offered as a competency based class and the
requirements for this should be started soon after completion of PHYS
247. You should be well on your way to meeting the objectives of this
course by the time you enroll in it in the semester before the one in
which you plan to graduate. Please talk to your advisor about this for
more details.
- Most of the courses listed on the grid above are in the semester in
which they are offered (odd = fall, even = spring). For instance, PHYS
460 is only offered in the spring semester.
- The grid above is only one way in which this program may be
completed and there are other possibilities which include all these same
courses. Talk to you advisor if you have questions.
- PHYS 398 is shown in the fall of year 3, but may be completed in any
semester or over the summer. We recommend that you become involved in
research as early as possible if it interests you.
