Scholarships for Physics Students

JMU - National Fellowships
The Honors Program has initiated coordination of those campus advisers for nationally competitive undergraduate scholarships since there is currently no such coordinating campus office at James Madison. This list of scholarships is NOT an attempt to be comprehensive of all awards the student should consider. Scholarships that are not listed include: JMU scholarships; state scholarships; solely need-based scholarships; doctoral or graduate research scholarships; scholarships below $5000; and paid internships (e.g. Smithsonian). Instead, the awards listed below represent a select set of nationally competitive capstone awards that represent significant funding and recognition for the student and the university and require specialized long-term planning and preparation. This is a first step in initiating mentoring partnerships between students and faculty beginning early in the student's college career in order to best prepare for the most competitive awards. For the best chances of success, students should begin planning and mentorship in their first or second year of college.

Other Physics Scholarships

The award consists of $2000 per year for new corporate scholars, and $3000 per year for renewal students to be used for tuition, room & board, educational materials. In addition, each physics department that hosts one or more APS minority undergraduate scholars and assigns a mentor for their student/s will receive a $500 award for programs to encourage minority students.

AWIS: Association for Women in Science
The Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award is a new AWIS Educational Foundation program for college sophomores and juniors studying physics, including space physics and geophysics, or geoscience. The award in the amount of $1,000 will be given annually to an exceptionally well-rounded student who excels in her studies as well as outdoor activities, service, sports, music, or other non-academic pursuits or who has overcome significant obstacles.
